This August, we were shooting off the coast of Los Angeles for a new sequence within Great White Shark 3D: the capture, tagging and release of juvenile White Sharks. Most of the inhabitants of one of the world’s busiest and most congested cities will be unaware of the fact that the shallow waters stretching from Manhattan Beach in the South to Malibu in the North, are a hot spot for juvenile Great Whites, probably attracted by the plentiful supply of food, such as rays and small fish. These sharks are probably only a year old, being only 5 to 6 feet long, so we suspect that the mothers give birth somewhere close by… they are born as pups, 4 to 5 feet long and immediately have to fend for themselves. Dr Chris Lowe tags these juveniles to monitor their movements for up to 10 years, whilst Monterrey Bay Aquarium also captures one for short term display, once assured of its health and robustness…
